This has been an exciting week in the Son of Swami household.
Mrs. SOS was so thrilled with Pope Francis being in the country she took off for Washington, where she was rumored to have been granted a private audience with the guy who gives new meaning to the term The All-Knowing One.
SOS figured she was there because the Pope is considering waiving the five-year waiting period to begin the canonization process for Mrs. SOS. Hey, after being married to SOS for 40 years she is generally regarded to be America’s only living saint.
It turns out Mrs. SOS was also interested in the Pope’s recent announcement of his desire to speed up the marriage annulment process. Evidently, Mrs. SOS asked the Pope if he would consider opening up a drive-thru window so she could be rid of SOS forever.
All of this came as a surprise to SOS because Mrs. SOS is best known as the Luckiest Woman on the Face of the Earth.
As Mrs. SOS was out of town trying to figure a way to ditch SOS, the other All-Knowing One stayed home to pick this week’s top games.
St. Ignace (4-0) at Johannesburg-Lewiston (4-0), 7, Friday. This will decide the Ski Valley Conference champ. J’Burg has a dominating two-way lineman in Nate Fox and he will have to be at his best to keep SOS’s main man, QB Gage Kreski, from controlling this game with his passing and his running. And J’Burg won’t want to throw the ball in the vicinity of Kreski. Of course, the way Nick May and Brandon Huff run the ball, who needs to throw? St. Clement 32, Johanna Eansor 23.
Warren Mott (4-0) at Clinton Township Chippewa Valley (3-1), 7, Friday. Mott can’t wrap up the MAC Red title, but it can end Chippewa Valley’s championship hopes. To do that, Mott’s speedy defense will have to keep Patrick Briningstool from playing pitch and catch with the terrific Stefan Claiborne. To that end, Mott’s Tylen Redding will have to be at his lock down best and Kyran Daniels needs to make plays all over the field. Mott’s Applesauce 24, Chipped Beef 21, OT.
Warren De La Salle (3-1) at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (4-0), 7, Friday. This is even bigger than a Catholic League Central Division showdown. This is St. Mary’s, the defending D-3 state champ, against De La Salle, the defending D-2 champ. The scary part for De La Salle’s defense is that St. Mary QB Brendan Tabone is being allowed to throw passes once the game begins, and then there is always the running of Justin Myrick. St. Mary’s by the Lake 21, De La Slappy 20.
Gaylord (4-0) vs. Traverse City Central (4-0) at Thirlby Field, 4, Friday. This game will tell us a ton about both teams. If Gaylord is going to end its six-game losing streak to Central it will have to use the GPS to keep track of where Devante Walker lines up because he is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. This is the first time Central is 4-0 since 1991 and this will let us know if the Trojans are back for real. The Gaylords 26, Merchant City Central 20.
Detroit Cass Tech (4-0) at Detroit King (4-0), noon, Saturday. King is ranked No. 1 in Division 2 and Cass Tech is No. 2 in Division 1 and there will be enough big-time college prospects to field a team, offense and defense. Both teams have good running attacks and dynamite defenses. The difference in this one could come down to which quarterback plays best. Momma Cass 29, King of the Hill 26.
