Michigan State is evaluating several Metro Detroit standouts for the football recruiting class of 2018. I was able to catch up with quarterback Theo Day of Dearborn Divine Child and cornerback Patrick Lupro of Belleville and get the latest on their recruitments.
Day is getting a lot of attention this fall. The 6-foot-5, 195-pound prospect already has multiple scholarship offers, and more could come soon. Day has the tools that fit the pro-style offense that Michigan State runs. He has been in East Lansing several times and likes what the Spartans have to offer.
“I went up there three weeks ago. I talk mostly with coach (Brad) Salem and coach (Terrence) Samuel,” Day said. “They really like my accuracy. I plan on heading up to Michigan State for a game, I just have to see what date will work best for me. Michigan State is a great university and clearly has a great football program. I’ve grown up watching Michigan State, so I’ve always thought highly of them.”
Kentucky, Toledo and Central Michigan have offered Day a scholarship. Cincinnati, Arkansas, Northwestern and other programs are taking a close look.
Meanwhile, Belleville, coached by Jermain Crowell, who spent many years as defensive coordinator at Detroit Cass Tech, will have several high-level recruits over the next few seasons. Lupro already has multiple scholarships on the table, and Michigan State is taking a close look at the 5-foot-9, 185-pounder.
“I have been up there a lot and I really like Michigan State,” he said. “I like all the coaches and I like the program they have up there. I have talked with a lot of the coaches and I talk to coach (Curtis) Blackwell from time to time. I will be at Michigan State when they play Wisconsin.”
Lupro has offers from Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Toledo and Cincinnati. He is being evaluated by pretty much everyone in the Big Ten.
