Birmingham Brother Rice football coach David Sofran will not return for a fourth season, the school announced Friday. The Warriors soon will begin a search for a new coach.
“We truly appreciate all of the contributions coach Sofran has made to Brother Rice during his three years as head coach, which followed his many years as an assistant coach and as a player,” Brother Rice athletic director Jeff Calcaterra said in a released statement. “His commitment and loyalty to our football program and school will be long remembered.”
Brother Rice lost to Birmingham Groves, 24-0, in a district final this season. The Warriors went 7-4 overall, after a 2-7 mark in 2015.
Sofran will remain on staff as associate athletic director for this academic year.
Calcaterra told the Free Press later Friday that no decisions have been made on the status of assistant coaches and that he will serve as the point person for the program until a coach is hired. An interim coach will not be named. Calcaterra said there is no set timetable for the hire, adding that sooner is better but that the process would not be rushed.
